Outside air of almost any temperature above zero contains heat. These pumps work by then pumping it from the outside air to provide warmth to water or living space. This can also be done to cool the inside of a home as well. ASHP come in two different types, a split system and a packaged system, and with a variety of options.

A split system contains three main components for operating, the indoor exchanger coil, the outdoor exchanger coil, and a compressor. The outdoor coil is responsible for getting the heat and the indoor coil then transfers it into a distribution system. The compressor fan is what is used to power the move of the warm air throughout the system. The efficiency of this system is dependent on temperatures above forty degrees Fahrenheit.

All three components of the packaged systems are typically located outdoors. The warm air is delivered throughout the home from duct work run through the wall or roof. An option with the packaged system is a ductless room heat pump. They are usually ran through a wall or installed through a window. These provide the highest efficiency for apartments or small homes.

ASHP can be used as both a heating and cooling system, giving it a great advantage among homeowners. This is not the only advantages to these pumps, cost efficiency is quite high compared to other sources. For example, an electric heater has been found to give off four times less warmth while using the same amount of energy as an ASHP. Some other great qualities include the 20 year life span and low maintenance.

A disadvantage of the ASHP system is the reliance on outdoor temperature for efficiency. Temperatures below forty degrees Fahrenheit decreases the efficiency of the system drastically. This can be a problem for homes who normally live in warmer climates, but may experience a colder than normal winter. Some other problems reported are with leaky ducts, low airflow, or incorrect refrigerant charge. All of these things can be avoided by having regular tune ups of your system.

ASHP technology is a growing field and is constantly introducing improvements to the system. The latest introduction is the reverse cycle chiller, an improvement that will give homeowners a choice in distribution systems, such as radiant floors. The cold climate heat pump is another innovation that will soon be available to consumers. This pump has two cylinders on a two speed compressor, which will allow for a pump system to perform optimally in cold weather.

When it comes to heating and cooling systems, Air Source Heat Pumps provide a home owner a significant savings in cost and energy usage. It is important to remember that this system might not be optimal for all homes.
